Fort Lauderdale Health InsuranceProper hand washing has many benefits - staying healthy, not sharing germs and forming good hygiene habits. Daycare, school and playgrounds all carry germs that your children come in contact with everyday. Helping them learn at an early age to wash their hands correctly can lay a foundation that can help them stay healthy for the rest of their lives. With the ability to live on surfaces for over eight hours, the spread of illnesses causes over 164 million lost days of school each year. During the months of December and January, it is especially important to help children learn to wash their hands in order to stay healthy.

Here are some tips to help:
  1. Make sure the water is warm, not hot, but warm.
  2. Singing a song like "Happy Birthday" or counting to ten twice is a good way to teach the proper amount of time it takes to completely wash hands. Make sure soap is lathered up on the hands, between fingers and even wrists.
  3. Rinse hands well with warm water.
  4. Dry with a clean towel or a paper towel. If you are in a public restroom, it is best to use a paper towel rather than the air bowler.
  5. If possible, in a public restroom, use the paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the bathroom door. If your child is old enough to understand this process, also encourage them to hold the door open with their foot while throwing the paper towel away. It is best to not touch the bathroom door.

When to wash hands is another important lesson to learn. Make sure your children know they should always wash their hands before they eat, after they play outside, before they prepare food, after they sneeze/cough, after playing with pets and after using the restroom. Even if hands do not look dirty, it is important that they understand the fact that their hands can still contain germs.

For some children, it takes an extra incentive to wash their hands properly. Hand washing charts with stickers and goals are a great way to help children see the benefit in washing their hands. For example, every time your child washes their hands before dinner, they get a sticker to place on the chart. At the end of the week, they get some sort of fun prize. This can make learning healthy habits fun!

Even though the weather in Southern Florida may not be cold this Christmas season, it is important to stay healthy. Give Pro Player Insurance Group a call at 954-316-4662 for more information on Fort Lauderdale health insurance.
